Statement about my works

Current socio – political uncertainties - that lead to introspection and self-examination, and enquiry of one’s identity and the social positioning of the self at such times - pique my interest. My works evolve from my immediate experiences. They are a portrayal of my various encounters, influenced somewhat by my own cultural background and the numerous texts and philosophies of my land.

My works have dealt with issues like traces left behind through a passage of time and memories juxtaposed with self preservation and/or the need to move out of self imposed peripheries and the continuous cycle of life (appearance and reappearance in various embodiments). They tend to be philosophical and fragile as I believe the nature of life to be.

At present I am working on various projects that deal with the issues that question the real and the unreal or the hyper-real, a feeling of individual crisis that arises out of and in reaction to financial globalization, probably challenging the real essence of the things.

My works are open to dialogues. I usually feel the importance to let my works be open to interpretation. My works are process oriented, and are a kind of monologue. The process includes an intimate relation that I share with the space at a given point of time, employing various methodologies simultaneously; the idea is to stop at nothing, creating little traits that are necessarily placed to hold the viewer’s attention, to create an atmosphere for the viewer to be reflective and “immersive”.

About Urban Dialogues

We are a group of artists working on the idea of sharing, constructing and reconstructing images/ideas, of cityscapes. The originality of the group is perhaps its diverse background, and the fact that it is about getting together through this platform, being able to put our “heads together” in moving as a group and working on different proposals and projects.

Personally it gives me the feeling of familiarity with, the respective countries that each of us represent; its urban spaces, its people, and the geo-political differences, as also the lifestyles of the community and the social structures in each of these countries.

The concept of exchange of ideas and working methods is not very new, thanks to the growing awareness and limitless opportunities through international art residencies and workshops. Unfortunately, given to the constraints of time and money, not all can partake in such events.

What drove me to Urban Dialogues was the fact that we can still have a possibility of interaction, and such an exchange of ideas. The idea is always the starting point, and perhaps the most important aspect in developing one’s own faculties. And this idea was a novel on its own. Each of us met through the various projects, new members were introduced during the meantime. Each bringing his own baggage full of attributes and peculiarities that only enriched and opened up new possibilities. And what better example of the benefits of global networking.

It has been a few months into the group, and harboring ideas that we can explore together, and learning together each day about new methods and from past mistakes, flurried productivity in meeting deadlines, growing together as a group, but importantly planning, thinking and working collaboratively. That’s the motivation as also the demands of a working group, in fulfilling the ambitions, aspiration and the expectation of each individual within the group and as a group.
